The aim of this course is to provide students with a general knowledge of Kazakh language, as it is spoken and written today.

Module Subject

This course acquaints students with the sound system and alphabet of Kazakh, provides systematic presentation of basic grammar and practical use of the language by stressing intensive practise in conversation, listening, reading and writing.

Module Aims
The aim of the course is to provide an introduction into Altaic studies with the special focus on Altaic people and their languages. The students should attain the geographical distribution, the present day situation of the Altaic peoples. It is also the goal of the course to present the most important literature on the topic to the students.

Module Subject

During the course the brief history of Altaic peoples and their present day situation will be dealt. Through the discussion also the classification of Altaic languages will be presented.

Module Aims
The aim of the module is to introduce the grammatical system and linguistic characteristic features of Buryat – one of the Mongolic languages. The course is taught by a native speaker. The course follows a thematic scheme.

Module Aims
The aim of the module to get pratice in reading of Middle-Turkic texts written in Arabic letters. The students should attain the Arabic script, the basic grammar and characteristic linguistic features of the language (text) under discussion and make themselves master of using the most important dictionaries. The get an introduction to the analysis of word structure (word-formation), the nature of the given lexicon. They have to learn the use of the most relevant etymological dictionaries as well.

During the semester the students treat the 9. chapter of the late-Chagatay author Abu'l Gāzī, written in 1663/65 (Desmaisons, P. I. Histoire des Mogols et des Tatares par Aboul -Ghazi Behadour Khan. I. Texte. II. Traduction. St.-Pétersbourg. 1871, 1874.). It is needed to transcribe and translate the text, work it up in morphological~ etymological respect.

The aim of the module to get practice in reading of Classical Mongol texts. The students should attain the Uighur-Mongol script, the basic grammar and characteristic linguistic feature of the language (text) under discussion and make themselves master of using the most important dictionaries. They get an introduction to the analysis of word structure (word-formation).

Module Subject

By the end of the course students will be able to understand and analyze classical Mongolian texts. They are needed to transcribe and translate the texts, work it up in morphological~ etymological respect.

Module Introduction to a Modern Turkic language
Title: Course on Karaim language

Module Aims
The aim of the modul is to get basic knowledge of Karaim varieties. The students should attain linguistic features of the different Karaim varieties and the history and the present situation of the Karaim communities.

Module Subject

During the course the history and the present situation of Karaim communities will be presented. By means of secular and religious texts the main linguistic features ot each Karaim variety will be dealt. The relationship between the Karaim varieties and the Middle Kipchak sources will also be discussed by the help of the translation of Pater Noster into Karaim, Cuman language and Armenian Kipchak.

Title: Reading Old Turkic and Middle Turkic sources

Module Aims
The aim of the module to get practice in reading of Old Turkic and Middle Turkic sources in Latin transcription. The students should attain the linguistic properties and the basic grammar of the language of the texts under discussion. They have to learn to use the most important dictionaries, etymological dictionaries and the relevant literature.

Module Subject

During the course a short historical background of the discussed Turkic sources will be dealt. Thus, the historical background of the Kül Tegin incsription, the historical background of the Cuman, Armenian Kipchak and Chagatay sources will be presented. In the classes the students will read in Latin transcription the following Turkic sources: Kül Tegin incsription, Kamenets Chronicle, Pater Noster in the Codex Cumanicus, Armenian Kipchak version of Pater Noster, Halis's story of Ibrahim. The main linguistic properties of the mentioned Turkic sources will be discussed.

Module Aims
The aim of the module is to get practice in reading of 15-17 century Ottoman-Turkish texts written in Arabic letters. The student can choose one of the following works: Gazavat-i sultan Murad Han; Tarih-i Peçevi; Tarih-i Naima; Die Autobiographie des Dolmetschers 'Osman Aga aus Temeschwar. By analysing the Ottoman chronicle the students should be familiar with the Ottoman rule in Hungary and the Ottoman-Hungarian relations of 15-17 centuries.The students should make themselves master of using the most important dictionaries (Zenker, Redhouse, Steingass). They get an introduction to the analysis of word structure (word-formation), the nature of the given text.

Module Historical linguistics
Title: Turkic loanwords in Hungarian

Module Aims
The aim of the course is to give an insight into results of the more than 100-year-long research on the Turkic loanwords in Hungarian. Critera will be given for the three main layers of the Turkic loanwords. Moreover, the students will have a better insight into the history of the Chuvash-type languages.

Module Subject

The first courses will give a short summary about the research on the Turkic loanwords. The following five courses will focus on the earliest "Chuvash-type" layer of the Turkic loanwords. Three courses will be about the so called "middle layer", laying emphasis on the Cuman loanwords. Moreover a Cuman text will be analyzed in detail. The two last courses will focus on the Ottoman loanwords.

Title: Comparative historical phonetics of Turkic languages

The aim of the course is: to give the students an analysis of the phonetics of the Turkic languages with the methods of comparative and historical linguistics; to give the recent classification(s) of Turkic languages on the base of phonetic correspondences; to enumerate the linguistic features which connect and/or differentiate the Turkic language groups and languages; to give a relative chronology of the branch off of the different Turkic language groups.

Module Subject

The subject of the module: Introduction to the historical phonology of the Turkic languages with special attention to relative chronology and linguistic geography. The relationship between linguistic reconstruction and synchronic analysis, language contact and borrowing. The comparative method: proving relationship, reconstruction, sub-grouping. The discussion will draw on data from a wide variety of languages.

The course aims at 'opening eyes' for literatures and cultures of lower dissemination, touching upon problem-areas like colonial and post-colonial art, multiculturalism, plurilingualism.

Module Subject

The course discusses the problematic of literatures/cultures that do not belong to the mainstream of literary history, still produce exciting works, especially at the turn of the millenium. The formerly neglected literatures can boast with several award-winning authors, many of whom were born in other countries or even continents. During the semester issues like colonialism, cultural identity, immigration and ethnic writing, post-colonialism and post-modernism will be highlighted.

Module Subject

The course plans to introduce their temporary place of residence for the foreign visiting students. In the framework of contemporary cultural and social theory it aims to open up the contemporary social and cultural changes of the town. On the lectures selected pieces of the cultural landscape of the town will be presented. The contact hours will be supplemented by short compulsory written exercises from week to week in which the participants reflect the lectures and their personal impressions on certain institutions, localities, happenings of the town. A selection of theses personal impressions will be published online.

Issues and topics will include, but not limited to: festivals, cultural institutions, historical sights, natural environment, town development, tourism.

Keywords: social communication, intercultural communication, memory and history, locality, tourism and invented traditions

Open for maximum 20 participants.

Module Subject

This course introduces students to the main themes of political and social  philosophy as they have emerged in the western intellectual tradition. The  lectures will provide a critical survey of some of the main contributions to  the history of political and social thought.  Writers include Hobbes, Locke,  Rousseau, Montesquieu, Adam Smith,  Tocqueville, and  Burke. This course  will meet the needs of both general students  and students of political  theory and philosophy.
